diversity, equity, and inclusion

Northwest students will be culturally competent citizens who understand and engage comfortably with difference. Back in Omaha where I grew up, everyone was like me; they had the same ideas, talked like me, and looked like me. Since coming to Northwest, I have been introduced to people with a variety of backgrounds and culture.

In my Intercultural Communication course, I wrote my final project about technology and how it has shaped intercultural relationships and communication.

For Intercultural Communication I also did an Intercultural Interview with the Diversity Coordinator on campus.

In my Intercultural Communication course, I wrote a Personal Cultural Research paper. I had to dive deep into my heritage. By doing this, my eyes have been opened to other cultures.

In my United States History to 1877 course, I was given the task of researching slavery and answering questions over it.

In the same US History to 1877 course, I did another assignment where I researched Native Americans and answered questions about their culture.

As Panhellenic Council President, I was given the task of creating a community-wide event. For my event, we played a Kahoot over all the sororities and had a Race and Privilege group discussion that I facilitated.

In the midst of COVID-19, Black Lives Matter protests arose around the country. As Alpha Sigma Alpha's president, I was given the task of writing a press release on our stance on the matter.

In a Sociology course, I had a reaction paper to different cultures and how they acted in the world.

In my Government and Politics course, my final project was an issue paper going over police brutality.

For my Organizational Communication course, I had a Culture Assignment where I had to research another institution's culture. I chose Harvard and got to talk to one of their students there.
