Fundraising, sales, & marketing

We can't make a yearbook or newspaper without money. The school doesn't fund us, so it has always been up to our staffs to get students and parents to buy the yearbooks or advertise in our papers. Up above you will see our advertisement slips that we send out to many businesses and companies at the beginning of the school year. Places like Hy-Vee, Rockbrook Camera, Scooter's coffee, the Army, and University of Omaha have paid us to give them ads in the back of our papers and yearbooks. This helps us gather money so we can print out papers, keep up with the new cameras and tripods, and make award-winning yearbooks. Before going on any Journalism Education Association(JEA) national trips, students on the staff are required to get the word out about our advertisements. In previous years, we would work on only selling yearbooks and getting money by that, but now we really have tried to focus on the advertising aspect of it.

social media

When it comes to social media for our publications, we mainly go straight for twitter. Many students use it, and it is a great way of getting the word out about anything new or important. For the yearbook page, we don't have many tweets mainly because the only thing we can tweet is "buy a yearbook!" which works at the beginning or end of the school year, but throughout it there really isn't much for us to post. Some tweets we have had are asking for interesting story ideas. Our school is packed with over 2,500 human beings, and it is hard for us to know what everyone is up to. This helps us get any extra stories into our yearbook.

Our newspaper page, on the other hand, is full of luring our audience. Before each school sporting event, we tweet out about STRIV. We have a variety of followers, ranging from students to parents to teachers. Each game, our STRIV team gets a load of viewers, which is why we tend to tweet out each time. Family members of the teammates enjoy watching any of our live streams because it is like they are there at the game with them. Grandparents and aunts and uncles from all over the globe can tune in to their family member's fist football game. Our audience is not only parents, many students look onto our Twitter page when they need to know when certain events are happening or when our newspaper or newest broadcast will be out. It's a way for us to connect with our viewers and readers and get them to look into what we are producing that week.
